Buenos Aires to Sydney
15 hours of fun
10.10.2011
Aside from planting my rear end in a not so comfortable chair for the 15 hour nonstop flight, the highlight of the flight was seeing the 7th continent, Antartica. I talked with one of the flight attendants asking him if we were going to be flying over Antarctica. He called the cockpit and one of the pilots told him we were currently flying over the arctic but that the cloud cover was so thick that you couldn’t see anything.
A few minutes later I was in the back of the plane stretching my legs and just started looking out the window and enjoyed the spectacular view of the clouds the captain described. Next thing I know I see a small break and from 40,000 feet I get a glimpse of the arctic landscape. But hey, it is the arctic so I run grab Abby, Lucy, Jake and Katie. A few minutes later there was a massive break in the clouds and you could make out flows of ice, water, icebergs and something that looked like buildings.
Jake and Lucy quickly commandeered the camera from me and started firing off several pictures. Seeing the landscape of the Arctic, even from 40,000 feet was insane and definitely a highlight of the flight.
Another highlight of this trip is when we were on final approach into Sydney with the sun setting we got great views of Darling Harbor, the opera house, the bridge and Bondi beach.
The last thing that made this trip incredibly unique was the fact that we woke up this morning at 5:40am in Buenos Aires and the sun didn’t set on us for more than 24 hours on us as we chased it west to Australia. A small thing, but I am trying to pull all the fun things I can out of a potentially painful flight.
